Our Visitation Program
Do you need reassurance and emotional support relating to your upcoming or recent ostomy surgery?
Ostomy Toronto has a very active visiting program. The patient has the option of a telephone or face-to-face visit by a qualified visitor. The patient may request a pre- or post-operative visit. Some of the goals of the visiting program are to provide moral support, answer non-medical questions, provide literature, invite the patient/family to an upcoming monthly meeting. Often, just seeing someone who “has been there” dispels common myths and stereotypes. Visitors are men and women of all ages and backgrounds. They may be manual labourers, executives, homemakers, or models but they all have the common bond of living an active life with an ostomy.
In addition, the Visiting Service welcomes family members, spouses/partners, parents of ostomy children and significant others. Mutual support to these individuals is important for meeting their emotional and educational needs as well as to help the patient in a supporting role.
The Visiting Coordinator, Candace Miron, can be reached by email at info@ostomytoronto.com or 416-631-7094. If possible, the co-ordinator will match the patient with a visitor of the same approximate age, sex and type of surgery.
